Former KIA Tigers manager Matt Williams has left the San Diego Padres for the San Francisco Giants, following manager Bob Melvin.
The Giants announced their coaching staff for the 2024 season on Thursday, with Williams named third base coach.
Williams was named the KIA manager in late 2019 and managed the team for two seasons before returning to the United States to become the San Diego third base coach in late 2021. When Melvin left the organization at the end of the season to join National League West contender San Francisco, Williams followed suit.
The Giants have a history with Coach Williams, as they were his first professional team. Drafted by the Giants with the third overall pick in the 1986 Major League Baseball Draft, Williams broke into the big leagues in 1987 and played for the Giants until 1996. During that time, he was a four-time All-Star and won three Gold Glove and three Silver Slugger awards. He also won the batting title in 1990 and the home run title in 1994.
"It means a lot to me to bring in a fantastic baseball coach," Melvin said of Williams, "and as our fans and players know, he's a Giants guy."
In addition to Williams, San Francisco also named Ryan Christensen bench coach and Pat Burrell hitting coach.
