Jayson Tatum dunking.
Jayson Tatum scored 32 points, including six 3-pointers, as the Boston Celtics remained undefeated after opening the National Basketball Association (NBA) season.
The Celtics defeated the Brooklyn Nets 124-114 on the road in their 2023-2024 NBA regular season opener at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, N.Y., on Friday (Feb. 5).
At 5-0, the Celtics remain in first place in the Eastern Conference.
In the first quarter, the Celtics began to build a lead behind a Tatum three-pointer and extended it to nine points at one point on a layup by Al Horford.
However, Brooklyn quickly closed the gap, led by nine straight points from Lonnie Walker IV, who was acquired from the Los Angeles Lakers this offseason, and ended the first quarter tied at 34-34.
After briefly giving Brooklyn the lead early in the second quarter, Boston answered with a Tatum three and a floater and then regained the lead on a Jaylen Brown layup.
The ball left Tatum's hands as he leapt from the 3-point line and crashed the rim at the halftime buzzer, giving Boston a 12-point lead and staving off a Brooklyn comeback.
Boston responded with back-to-back threes from Brown, Kristaps Porzingis, and Jrue Holiday to pull within three points of Brooklyn.
Back-to-back baskets by Brooklyn's Johnny Walker IV and Dennis Smith Jr. put the Celtics on the brink of a comeback, but two 3-pointers by Ace Tatum set the tone and sealed the game.
Tatum finished with 32 points and 11 rebounds, while Jaylen Brown added 23 points.
Porzingis and Holiday, who were acquired ahead of the season, did their part with 22 and 18 points and 10 assists, respectively.
