Core Web Vitals for Small Business Websites: What to Fix First
Google uses a set of measurements called Core Web Vitals to judge how fast and stable a page feels to real visitors. For a small business website, these numbers matter less as a ranking trick and more as a simple question: does the page load quickly and behave properly on a phone? If it does not, visitors leave before they ever read about your services.
The three numbers in plain EnglishLargest Contentful Paint (LCP) is how long the main content takes to appear. Aim for under 2.5 seconds. Interaction to Next Paint (INP) is how quickly the page responds when someone taps a button. Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS) is how much the page jumps around while loading, such as a button moving just as you try to tap it.
Fix 1: Shrink your imagesOversized photos are the most common cause of slow pages on small business sites. Resize images to the width they are actually shown at, and save them in a modern format such as WebP. A hero image rarely needs to be more than 200 KB.
Fix 2: Remove what you do not useEvery plugin, chat widget, slider and tracking script adds weight. Make a list of everything installed on your site and remove anything that does not clearly help a customer or your business. On WordPress sites, this step alone often makes a visible difference.
Fix 3: Reserve space for images and embedsLayout shift usually happens because the browser does not know how big an image or video will be. Setting width and height on images, and giving embeds a fixed container, keeps the page steady while it loads.
Fix 4: Use caching and a decent hostA caching plugin and a reliable hosting plan make every page faster for every visitor. Very cheap shared hosting is often the hidden reason a site feels slow no matter what else you change.
How to check your progressRun your homepage and your most important service page through Google PageSpeed Insights, note the scores, make one change at a time and test again. Search Console also shows a Core Web Vitals report once your site has enough visitors.
